When we arrived at the forest with our color wheel M immediately found a wild strawberry and a yellow leaf to add to our color wheel.
"Look, I found a yellow leaf and one of those of red berries!"
The kids set off into the forest going on a color hunt. They all ran in different directions to find more materials throughout the thick trees.
"I see a lot of green."
"I think there is some red over there!"
"This is just brown, we don't need that."
Our time at the forest was driven by the colors we have been creating in our room with our hands, brushes, and eye droppers. Some children took the time to search the grass for things like wild strawberries or small flowers while others looked above their heads to find some purple and red berries.
"The leaves are yellow because they are changing."
On the way back from the forest the whole class excitedly pointed out an entire bush full of the small orange berries. They were excited to pick a few and add them to the color wheel.
If your child happens to come home with purple hands, these are the culprit. While looking for different natural colored materials, some kids came across these incredibly inviting pink and purple berries. Within minutes several of them had it smeared across their hands, shins, and even tshirts. After experimenting with the colors between their fingers they brought them over to the wheel.
The last challenge ahead was finding something blue in the forest. Many would think that finding something in nature that color would be difficult, but the Pine kids were up to the task. After several minutes of searching they found what they were looking for: a small blue flower caught between thick green grass.
"We found it! It's blue like that!"
