Predictions

What else can we do with leaves? Just when we thought we have done everything we can with the leaves that have fallen, the Pine kids came up with another idea on how we use them in our classroom.

"I think we need to paint the leaves. We need to make them all different colors."

We headed outside to find different leaves on the playscape.
"We need to get all different kinds of leaves to paint."

K & M searched the playscape for different shaped leaves.

We headed back inside to get started on painting leaves. Before we started the kids were asked:
What do you think will happen to the leaves?
What do you think will happen to the paper?

L started dobbing the leaves a variety of different colors.
"Look they are turning different colors! I am making it red and orange, and blue."

"I think the leaves will turn different colors and like be really pretty! They are going to look beautiful. The paper is going to be pretty too."

"They are going to change when we take them off. They will be all different colors. I don't know what the paper will look like, probably like pink and blue."

The kids finished dobbing and moved them aside so they could dry.

"Let's take the leaves off now!"
"The paint isn't dry we have to wait!"

We waited and waited until the very end of our day before heading home.

What do you think happened to the leaves?
What do you think happened to the paper?

"The leaves are all colorful! They look beautiful!"
"The paper is going to look like a galaxy."
"I think it's going to be all rainbow."

The leaves were peeled off one by one.

"I don't think it worked."
"I don't see anything."

Just then, M gasped.
"I see it! I can see the leaf! It has a lot of paint around it."

They chose another paper to peel the leaves off of. This time, the leaf pattern was almost perfectly outlined on the paint saturated paper.

"I can see the leaves! They are right there."
"They are so pretty!"
"Can we do it again tomorrow? I think we need to add more paint to the other ones so we can see the leaves better."

Making predictions has been really fun throughout the course of our color and leaf study. It has helped the kids think beyond what they are seeing and even begin to talk a little deeper about the topic.
