Interesting Finds

The Pine room decided it was too muddy to play at the forest today. Instead we went on a walk around the block looking to see if anything in the neighborhood was different or interesting.

M quickly noticed a small fence surrounding a tree.
"I've never seen THAT before! It's the smallest fence!"

From there, many of the kids noticed things they didn't necessarily notice before.

"I really like this fence! It has such a beautiful design!"

Not far from the two fences the kids spotted before, W looked up and saw strings of bright Christmas lights.
"Look! The lights!"

All of the kids stopped and stared at the lights.
"It's Christmas!"
"No, Christmas is over it's just the lights."
"We have lights are our house too!"

A few houses down, M noticed a small branch.
"What's this?"
He inspected the spruce tree branch and then took a sniff.
"Oh it smells good!"
M then proceeded to pass the branch to each one of his friends giving them a turn to take a whiff.
"EW! I don't like it!"
"It smells nasty."
"I think it smells good!"

We continued on!

A about a block later a L, M, and J noticed numbers on a post on a set of stairs leading up to the house.
"Look! There's numbers on here!"
"I see a two!"
"There's a oh and a two too!"
"Why are there numbers here?"

The kids were most surprised to see a certain kind of truck right in front of our school!
"It's a mixer!"
"It does construction!"
"I love mixer trucks!"

Our first walk around the neighborhood in the new year was a success! The kids noticed different changes around town and had the opportunity to share with one another. What a beautiful afternoon to check out Webster Groves.

Day 2 Pine Room Fun!

For our invitations we have our small world were we can tell stories about what our families like to do outside. In our dramatic play we are showing how we can care for others, including our baby dolls. Outside we are checking out how fun our giant snail and mud kitchen are.

Today was “the most amazing day” according to one friend! Thanks to PAT for leaving the glow party up for us! We also started working on a project that combines letters and numbers, it’s called a graph.

Families

Today our conversation regarding our skin color continued, but evolved a little bit. Instead of just talking about our own skin, the kids started talking about their families.  "Well, I have brown skin and so does my mom and my brother. My dad has white skin!"  "My mom and I are white, and my dad and sister are really tan!" "My family all has brown skin like me. My mom is a little different brown though. My baby sisters look like me!" We got out the skin tone colored crayons and the kids carefully chose the colors they needed to represent their families.  "I need the tan ones because I am kind of tan and so is my mom. My dad and sister are darker than us so I need to use like a darker brown. I need the black too because they have dark hair. I have brown hair and my mom has like brownish hair but it's also kind of yellow." S worked on her family portrait as well. She, too, noted that she needed different colored cra...
