Opening the Lemon

The kids have been very intrigued by these lemons we have in our room. Not only do they continue to describe what it is like, they are using all of their senses to explore it.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to taste the lemon, but today they decided they wanted to try and open it up without a knife.
"It's going to be so hard!"
"I think we need a knife to open it."
"I can't do it with just my hands."

It was very difficult to try and pierce the skin of the lemon. It didn't seem to budge no matter what the kids tried. Some tried hitting against the table, no luck. Others tried biting into it, no luck either.

"How are we going to open it?"

After scoring the skin of the lemon with a knife, the kids now had access to open it up. They would wedge their fingers in the open space created by the cut and begin to tear the peel off of the fruit itself.

"This is still so hard! It's like really hard and I think we should still use a knife."
"It's kind of like peeling a orange!"

Everyone has really enjoyed exploring the lemon and using all of their sense to find more about them. Our next quest: how many seeds does a lemon have?

Day 2 Pine Room Fun!

For our invitations we have our small world were we can tell stories about what our families like to do outside. In our dramatic play we are showing how we can care for others, including our baby dolls. Outside we are checking out how fun our giant snail and mud kitchen are.

Creek Time

Happy Tuesday! We spent our entire afternoon out at Larson Park! It was definitely a hot one so when the kids heard we were going to get to play in the creek, they screamed in excitement. Not everyone wanted to stomp around in the shallow water and that was a-okay. Such a fun afternoon splashing around, exploring, and doing a great job sticking together as a class!

Tree Swing

The Pine kids were SO excited to get back to the forest today. Because S spends the beginning of her day in another classroom, she was already familiar with a coveted branch that hung low enough for the kids to try and swing on.  "There's a tree swing at the forest, we should all do it!" S, who seemed to display a high level of confidence, took a hold of the branch as R handed it to her. She took a deep breath and jumped off the log.  S swung with grace over the ground.  The others watched in awe and quickly lined up to take turns.  Each friend took a different approach and not always quite sure on how to get the same kind of lift and swing S did. W seemed unsure on the whole activity, but was willing to try. He couldn't quite get the desired swinging motion and lost interest after his first try.  L saw how the others were swinging and although a little scared, decided to try several times in a row be...
