It's Raining, It's Pouring

There was quite a buzz about the weather today. The kids were so interested in the nonstop rain that has been occurring this afternoon that we took an opportunity to talk about predictions and some other weather we may experience.

Before diving into a deeper discussion about the rain, we first took a poll of the temperature. The question was:

"Was it hot or cold on your way to school today?"

All of the kids agreed that it was cold walking into school today.
"I had to wear a coat!"
"Yeah, I didn't wear a coat and I was cold."
"I'm cold now!"
"It's cold outside and it's so rainy."

After talking about our current weather, the kids were then asked:
"What do you think it will be tomorrow?"

While some friends think it might be sunny, others were not convinced.

"It's going to be cold and rainy!"
"Yeah, so cold."
"It's chilly!"

Lastly, the kids took some time to draw what they think the rain looks like

L used straight and squiggly lines to depict the rain he saw outside.
"The rain comes down like this. It is a lot of rain! Look, this is the lightning in the storm!"

O on the other hand took a different approach and created a big fluffy storm cloud.

"It's a cloud. The rain is here."

Making predictions can be a difficult skill, but with a topic like weather it becomes a little more concrete of a concept. We are all anxious to see who predicted the right kind of weather.

Day 2 Pine Room Fun!

For our invitations we have our small world were we can tell stories about what our families like to do outside. In our dramatic play we are showing how we can care for others, including our baby dolls. Outside we are checking out how fun our giant snail and mud kitchen are.

Today was “the most amazing day” according to one friend! Thanks to PAT for leaving the glow party up for us! We also started working on a project that combines letters and numbers, it’s called a graph.

Families

Today our conversation regarding our skin color continued, but evolved a little bit. Instead of just talking about our own skin, the kids started talking about their families.  "Well, I have brown skin and so does my mom and my brother. My dad has white skin!"  "My mom and I are white, and my dad and sister are really tan!" "My family all has brown skin like me. My mom is a little different brown though. My baby sisters look like me!" We got out the skin tone colored crayons and the kids carefully chose the colors they needed to represent their families.  "I need the tan ones because I am kind of tan and so is my mom. My dad and sister are darker than us so I need to use like a darker brown. I need the black too because they have dark hair. I have brown hair and my mom has like brownish hair but it's also kind of yellow." S worked on her family portrait as well. She, too, noted that she needed different colored cra...
