Self Portraits Part 1

Happy Monday! Not only did we spend a majority of our time outside, but we also had another friend start! We are so happy F is back and ready to learn.

Before heading outside, the kids had a few choices in the classroom. One of those options was the self portrait table. J walked on over and sat down. He noticed all the different color playdoh laying out.

"Hey! It's brown!"

He began rolling it around and then flattened it out with the palm of his hand. He carefully pick out different pieces to make his eyes and mouth.

"This looks like me! It's brown like me!"

He is right, the playdoh is brown like him! J giggled and smiled as he realized he was making a face that was the same color as his own.
"It's brown like me! It's me!" He would exclaim as he continued to add more features of his face.

"I need a smile. I can't make it. Will you help?"

J kept looking at the brown dough and then at his skin. He would run his fingers across the playdoh and then very gently rub his own skin.
"I like my skin."

His commentary and positive self talk about himself was quite moving. He was so engaged and really took ownership of the little playdoh face he made. It's incredible to watch kids start to notice different features they have, including the color of their skin. We hope to continue to celebrate our likenesses and differences throughout the year and really take note of what makes us individuals in a larger community.

For our invitations we have our small world were we can tell stories about what our families like to do outside. In our dramatic play we are showing how we can care for others, including our baby dolls. Outside we are checking out how fun our giant snail and mud kitchen are.
